Maria Margarita Barboza "Snooky," 62, was born on November 22, 1962, in Houston, Texas, and entered eternal rest on February 27, 2025, in her beloved hometown. Snooky was a deeply loved sister, aunt, and friend, whose presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Despite living with Down Syndrome, Snooky never saw herself as different. She was a woman defined by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for others, particularly children and the elderly. Her compassion and commitment to others were evident in everything she did, from her fervent prayer life to the countless hours she dedicated to volunteering in her community. Snooky felt a strong calling to pray for those she believed needed it most, always lifting them up in her heart.

Among Snooky's greatest joys was traveling, with a particular fondness for attending LULAC conventions. She also found delight in her frequent visits to Walmart, where she would buy a large box of French fries from McDonald's, wandering the aisles and sharing them with children she encountered. It was a simple yet beautiful act, and it was always heartwarming to witness—no parent ever turned down her sweet offer.

Snooky had an extraordinary gift for making others feel seen and valued. She could effortlessly strike up conversations with strangers, treating them like old friends, always asking about their families and, with genuine curiosity, inquiring about their age. She had a special way of connecting with people, particularly the elderly, always opening doors for them and taking the time to check in on how their day was going. Her warm, welcoming spirit made everyone around her feel important and appreciated.

Snooky's infectious humor and boundless charisma drew people to her. Her quick wit and playful remarks could make anyone laugh, often without her even trying. She had a natural charm, a way with words, and an endless supply of comebacks. Her personality was magnetic, and she brightened any room she entered.

At home, Snooky loved to help with cooking and the day-to-day tasks of family life. She also had a creative side, with a passion for writing and coloring. Music was another of her great loves—she enjoyed singing and dancing, even if she didn’t always know the words. She would often make up her own lyrics while strumming her guitar and creating songs that reflected her joyous spirit.

Snooky's commitment to serving her community was unwavering. For more than 30 years, she volunteered with Sociedad Mutualista Obrera Mexican Annual Thanksgiving in the Barrio, dedicating her time and energy to helping those less fortunate. Her generosity extended to the Sociedad Mutualista Obrera Mexican Annual Christmas in the Barrio, where she wrapped gifts, stuffed stockings, and distributed toys, blankets, and food to families in need. She also volunteered with the City of Houston Annual Thanksgiving Feast at George R. Brown and participated in the Annual Comida Drive with the Houston Police Department, Fiesta Food Mart, Pepsi, and various churches and organizations.

Her involvement with LULAC Council 214 brought her to the heart of the community, where she helped with annual back-to-school drives, BBQ fundraisers, and the distribution of box lunches and water to the homeless. She was equally active in LULAC Youth Council 1926, where she assisted with fundraising events, city cleanups, and decorated floats for the Cinco de Mayo and Fiesta Patrias parades. Snooky also volunteered at the Houston Food Bank, visited the elderly in retirement homes, and brought handmade greeting cards to brighten their days.

Her love for St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church inspired her to serve in various ways, including stuffing bulletins, picking up music sheets after Mass, and spending time in adoration. Snooky also cherished the opportunity to chaperone her nieces to their high school dances, creating joyful memories that they will carry with them forever.

Snooky's respect and reverence for the military led her to participate in the solemn tradition of placing wreaths at the National and Military Cemetery on Across America Day each December, paying tribute to those who served our country.

Snooky was preceded in death by her parents, Juan Miguel and Maria Trinidad Barboza, as well as her siblings Maria Barboza, Mary Cano, Gloria Rodriguez, Emmet Barboza, Joe Angel, Jesus, and Guadalupe Barboza.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and joy to be cherished by her brothers, John Barboza, Francisco Barboza, and Paul Barboza; her sisters, Mamie Garcia, Aurora Barboza, and Rosalinda B. Idlebird; her special and loving niece, C.J. Alves; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever hold her memory close in their hearts.

Snooky's spirit of generosity, kindness, and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were touched by her remarkable life.
